MediaTek debuts the Dimensity 820 5G Chipset for Upper-Midrange Devices

The Taiwanese tech company, MediaTek has unveiled their latest chipset codenamed Dimensity 820 5G. The new Dimensity 820 5G will succeed the Dimensity 800 which was launched earlier this year. This move is kind of awkward considering the fact the Dimensity 800 chipset hasn’t been featured on any smartphone yet and was launched just a few weeks after it unveiled the Dimensity 1000 plus

Anyways, the Dimensity 820 chip is for the upper-midrange market and features faster CPU and GPU performance. It also supports 120Hz panels and an ISP which is improved. The chipset is built on a 7nm FinFET process technology. Its Octa-core CPU features four ARM Cortex-A76, all clocked at 2.6 GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 clocked at 2.0 GHz. With this CPU composition, the chipset is better than Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chip in terms of raw CPU power.

For graphics, the Dimensity 820 features five cores of ARM Mali G57. This is a slight upgrade from the Dimensity 800, which features just four cores of the same GPU. Also to improve graphics performance, the new chipset comes with the HyperEngine 2.0 technology. Aside from graphics improvement, the technology enhances software performance, network latency optimizations, HDR visuals enhancement, data concurrency and lots more.

In the display department, the Dimensity 820 chipset supports FHD+ with 120Hz refresh rate. Thanks to the Image Signal Processor (ISP), which is called “Imagiq 5.0” by the company, the chipset now supports 80MP camera sensors compared to the 64MP sensor on the Dimensity 800.

The Dimensity 820 chip comes with an integrated 5G modem, which is no surprise since every chip in the Dimensity family has it. The 5G modem supports 5G Carrier Aggregation, Voice Over New Radio (VoNR) on both SIMs, dual SIM standby, and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS).

Unlike the Dimensity 800 which is not yet featured on a device, it seems like we will be seeing the Dimensity 820 chip in action soon. Chinese phone maker, Xiaomi has announced that the upcoming Redmi 10X smartphone will be powered by the Dimensity 820 chipset. So let’s all look forward to seeing how the new chipset performs when it’s finally in commercial production.
